Whether you are a recent college graduate or you are twenty-five years into your career, there are always opportunities to look at your job or your career and make the necessary changes. Oftentimes people box themselves into a job because they aren’t sure how to go about finding a new one.

Knowing When to Change Jobs or Start Over

Half the battle of changing jobs is knowing that you may have come to the end of the line with your current job or role. When deciding on next steps, keep the next few bullets in mind or you might just find yourself right back in a dead-end situation in a few months:

  • Schooling: Whether you just graduated or you went to school a few decades ago, think back on the traits you learned in school. What type of career did you envision for yourself. Is that where you are today? If not, make the necessary changes to get back into the field and career you dreamed about. If it’s been a while since you graduated, review current job listings and determine if additional schooling or certificates are needed to get your career back on track. Don’t just be someone who goes to their job; be someone who has a good career.
  • Experience: If you’ve been in the workforce for a few years, list out the experience you’ve gained in your career and emphasize it on your resume. New graduates should also emphasize their schooling and their experience in the latest technology and innovations to make up for any shortcomings in career experience on their resumes.
  • New Start: Sometimes a fresh start is all anyone needs. Be cautious not to just jump at the first job that becomes available though. Be sure you are lining up your new start with career goals as well as lining up a company that you feel acknowledges those opportunities for you.
