Taking Hold of your Career

“Tumble outta bed and I stumble to the kitchen. Pour myself a cup of ambition. Yawn and stretch and try to come to life. Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin’. Out on the street the traffic starts jumpin’. With folks like me on the job from 9 to 5.”

Anyone out there who is a child from the 1980’s may remember the opening lyrics to Dolly Parton’s song 9 to 5 (and even if you’re not, the lyrics may still hold true). Regardless, take a minute to think about your own career status right now:

  • Are you just going through the motions of trying to get by?
  • Do you feel like your career is heading nowhere?
  • Is your career a career or simply a job?

“Workin’ 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’. Barely gettin’ by, it’s all takin’ and no givin’. They just use your mind and they never give you credit. It’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it.”

Getting Out of the Work Rut

If you’re seriously trying to take hold of your career, take the time to think through the important things you need from your career.

Career Advancement

“9 to 5, for service and devotion. You would think that I would deserve a fat promotion. Want to move ahead but the boss won’t seem to let me.”

Career advancement and increased salary are two important factors to consider when taking hold of your career. Find a company that not only respects the work you provide, but also acknowledges and rewards your accomplishments.

Finally think about what you’re doing: is it what you want to do or is a career change in order? Changing careers can be one of the toughest and most intimidating moves. After all, you probably need to start over in stature and pay. Sometimes that can be a tough pill to swallow. Financially it may not even be an option.

Whatever path you decide, taking control of your career is your move. Take your first step by contacting Kane Partners and let us help get your career back on track.
