Employment Trends and Where They May Lead

When comparing the staffing landscape to September of 2014, there was an increase of about 3.7% more employees for the same period this year.* The The U.S. Bureau of Labor (BLS) Statistics also noted that temporary employment showed a small amount of change from August to September of this year, at about 0.2%, based on seasonally adjusted data.

The BLS also revealed non-seasonally adjusted data on the actual number of jobs in the economy and showed that temporary staffing increased about 1.5% from August to September, 2015. This month also saw an increase of 142,000 jobs in total U.S. non-farm payroll, while updates from July and August show a decrease of about 59,000, with the total monthly gains average hovering at 167,000 for the past three months time.

Richard Wahlquist, president and chief executive officer of the American Staffing Association, stated that:

“The news behind the headlines is that demand continues to outpace the supply of qualified candidates for staffing and recruiting firms across several industry sectors,”

He also noted that a 62.4% labor force participation rate drop, lowest since 1977, indicates that there needs to be much more focus on ensuring that the workforce in America has the skills and qualifications to support growth in the U.S. while maintaining a high level of competitiveness.
