Internships

Well, we all start our career somewhere. For students who are able to work as interns during their college careers, their internship provides great experience and exposure for the working life that awaits them following their college days.

From an employer side, graduates who are entering the workforce with an internship on their resume may have a leg up on their graduate colleagues who do not. Your experience as an intern, as well as skills learned during your internship, provide great talking points during interviews.

Prospective employers will be much more anxious to talk with a graduate who has relevant work experience that an internship will provide.

Benefits

The benefits of an internship are plentiful. From a career development perspective, the experience, the exposure, and the opportunities internships present for college students are immense.

  • Experience: Internships provide the type of real-life experience the classroom environment cannot provide. Whatever your major may be, the opportunity to get hands-on experience in your field via an internship provides prospective employers with the level of responsibility and development you’ve attained.
  • Exposure: Internships not only provide the opportunity to gain hands on experience, but also provide exposure to contacts that you may not otherwise have had. This exposure allows you to begin building a network of individuals in the field (which you may realize later down the road is invaluable).
  • Opportunities: In addition, the contacts you make in your internship may open doors and possibilities that may not have otherwise been there. As much as your experience and skills are so important to prospective employers, it’s always good to have a few contacts on the inside who may be able to get you in the door for an interview.

Advice for Interns

Sitting on the beach and hanging out with friends is the way we all want to go, but at some point decisions need to be made regarding next steps after graduation. Begin thinking through now, and talk to a counselor at school on the pros of an internship and how it may positively affect you.
